Happy Bikes Balance Bikes - Interview
Posted on July 20 2018
What motivates you to get out of bed in the morning?’
Mornings are a busy time at our place, so getting out of bed is easy. Theres many jobs to do including, getting our toddler ready for kindergarten, taking the dog for a quick walk, feeding the cat and checking our overnight orders!
Why did you launch Happy Bikes?
Growing up in the UK you’re constantly surrounded by bikes and cyclists and learning to ride a bike is key part of having fun and getting around. After living in Singapore for a while I noticed many of my adult friends didn’t ride or feel confident riding a bike and where unaware of the balance bike concept.
Hoping to inspire a new generation of confident young riders we decided to launch our Happy Bikes range of balance bikes.
What does an average day look like at Happy Bikes?
An average day is really based around fulfilling customer orders, we looked at 3rd party fulfillment services, but decided against this as we actually unpack and inspect every bike before sending out and importantly we pump the tyres! We couldn’t bare the thought of an eager child waiting to ride their new bike only to be left ‘deflated’ by the lack of a simple pump!
Can we ask the story behind the smily face logo?
Sure, we understand that we are a bicycle brand aimed at children, our consumer, however, our customer is the parent . So after naming our company Happy Bikes we needed a logo that would appeal to parents in their 30’s-40’s, the right age to have possibly been a ‘raver’ and into the Acid House scene in the 80’s+90’s. (At least we were!!).
What inspires you?
We take inspiration from many places, but are really impressed by sports men and women. Many hours spent on the training ground, many sacrifices made and then having to perform there and then at the blow of a whistle or fire of a gun.
We actually really like the Super Super Dope ‘Train Hard, Fight Easy’ Hoodies, a really powerful quote. Can we have one please??
What do you enjoy most with running your own hustle?
Its really the flexibility to spend time with the family and work from home. Adding a commute to a working day not only eats in to precious time and can also be pretty stressful.
Was there a time when you almost gave up, how you felt about that, and what you did instead of giving up?
Fortunately Happy Bikes has been lots of fun and the challenges have never really pushed us to think about giving up. I guess if we do go through a down turn we will focus on why we started the business in the first place.
What do you think is the biggest challenge for Happy Bikes?
The challenge for Happy Bikes is really the size of the Singapore market and we are limited to sell overseas due to the freight costs, actually if theres any overseas wholesalers interested in taking our bikes, please do reach out email@example.com
Any advice for your previous boss?
Ha, maybe no advice, but an apology! Im really best at working for myself.
Do you have a role model, and why?
I really admire my wife, she gets up everyday and heads into the corporate grind, she’s awesome!!
Are there any brands, business’ or business leaders that you admire?
We really love the brand Deus Ex Machina, not only does the business have the most amazing name, the apparel, bikes, branding, films, photography, cafes, really do portray a super aspirational, cool and consistent story.
What would you like to achieve Professionally in 6 months / 1 year / 5 years?
We started Happy Bikes to really inspire a new generation of cyclists, we would love to see the Happy Bikes kids progress on to pedal bikes (without the training wheels) and go on to enjoy a healthy and active lifestyle.
Any advice for talent looking to set up their own hustle?
Don’t give up the day job as you will need money to get going and maintain your business before the returns start to come. And really keep your overheads down, every time you spend a dollar, think if you really need to!!
Do you have a favorite quote?
One that sticks in my mind is from an old MTV spot “If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem’. Hey can you put that on a tee for us??
